ORGANISERS of Tavistock's Heritage Open Days were delighted with the amount of interest and support they received from the public during the open days on September 13 and 14.

For the open days three of the town's finest historic buildings were open free of charge. There were guided tours of the Guildhall and police cells, a display in the medieval Abbey Chapel porch and Plymouth Road Cemetery chapel.

Visitors to the Guildhall also contributed words and phrases to a community heritage poem, which has been pieced together by Vanni (Myfanwy) Cook and will be on display in the library over the next few weeks.

The buildings were opened by the Tavistock Townscape Heritage Partnership working with the History Society, Abbey Chapel, town council, Tavistock Forward, Moorland Guides and the Devon Historic Buildings Trust.

Chairman John Taylor said: 'The events attracted visitors to the town as well as local people. I would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to make them such a success.'

Coordinator Andrew Thompson said: 'This is the first time the partnership has taken part in Heritage Open Days. We are really grateful to local people for their support. Next year we hope to make the event bigger, with more buildings open and more activities for families.'
