VOLUNTEERS looking for interesting conservation work would do well to consider helping Dartmoor Preservation Association when they undertake a scrub clearance project at Shaugh Bridge in Dartmoor National Park.

The old clay works at Shaugh Bridge were built to handle china clay piped in slurry form from the quarries at Cadover Bridge. It was reconstituted into solid form and dried in kilns before being loaded on wagons and transferred to the railway at Shaugh Platform.

The DPA's project is to clear vegetation from the loading bays that are currently swamped with gorse, brambles, shrubs and small trees. A radical change in appearance is expected as the edge of the clay works emerges from the undergrowth.

The project is expected to be completed in four days but it needs volunteers. Work will be taking place on Monday February 2, Wednesday February 4 and Wednesday February 11.

Anyone who can help should contact the DPA's conservation officer Paul Rendell on 01837 54727 or [email protected]">[email protected] for further details.
