A GROUP of entrepreneurs at Kelly College have joined forces to form a company helping youngsters to find jobs.

United Jobs Ltd comprises 15 students whose mutual fascination with the business world led them to create a website featuring jobs for young people aged 14 to 21.

Julia Howard, 17 and head of operations and legal advisor for Unite Jobs Ltd, said: 'At first we were unsure of the exact nature of the product or service we wished to provide, however our mutual concern over the dire nature of teenage employment in the current economic climate led us to realise that some form of support network for youths seeking jobs was much needed.

'It seemed only natural that such a service would be heavily involved with the internet as it is such an integral part of young people's lives and this prompted us to consider the benefits of creating a job providing website run by teens for teens.

'Our initial market research yielded very promising results and we discovered that such an enterprise would be unique — there was no other website in the UK offering jobs exclusively to teenage clientele.'

Julia said the first challenge arose over the construction of the website. Although Kelly's ICT department created a range of website designs, none had quite the capabilities they wished to incorporate.

'We decided to seek the help of professionals and we were incredibly lucky in discovering Westcountry Website Designs, whose brilliant communication and bright ideas led us to create the perfect website.'

Julia said as delighted as they were with the site, it was useless without any jobs to feature on it. The team launched a campaign on Tavistock, meeting with shop owners and explaining the service and its benefits.

'We had fantastic response not only from local stores but also from Tavistock's charity shops, many of whom we have established links with and some of which, such as Oxfam Book Shop, we have already created volunteering advertisements for on our site.'

The team is keen to build its contact base and raise its profile in the community.
