WITH hedgehogs waking from their hibernation earlier than ever before, a Tavistock wildlife group is holding a Hedgehog Awareness talk.

The familiar spiny characters normally do not stir from their annual slumber until at least April, but climate changes have brought them out early, and many are facing starvation and other dangers.

An expert from Devon's Prickly Ball Hedgehog Hospital said: 'Hedgehogs waking up from hibernation so early is altering their nocturnal habits.

'There is an inadequate supply of food at this time of year, so instead of just foraging at night, they are moving out in the day time in search of food. This is very dangerous for hedgehogs.'

He said winter fat reserves would be very low, so if one were spotted abroad during the day it would be very hungry. Hedgehogs are particularly fond of muesli, chopped nuts, especially peanuts and fruit as well as cat or dog food, plus, of course, water.

The Tavistock branch of the Devon Wildlife Trust will be addressed by Jean Linton from The Hedgehog Hospital Prickles Unit in Plymouth on April 12 at the Parish Church Centre on Plymouth Road.

The event starts at 8pm and a £1.50 donation is suggested. Afterwards there will be a trip to the hospital.
