A LANDMARK in Bere Alston needs help if it is to remain. One of the bulbs in the illuminated cross on top of Holy Trinity Church has not been working for some time, but Health and Safety regulations mean scaffolding now has to be erected every time someone needs to go up to the cross, which is a ?fairly expensive process?, said the rector, the Rev Nick Law. It is hoped to take down the cross, do any repairs needed, then put it back in such a way that it can be lowered to change light bulbs without any further need for scaffolding. The cost of the scheme is approximately £2,000. The church has put aside £500, and a further £500 has been offered, but help is needed to raise the remaining amount. It is hoped those who think the cross is an important symbol will help. Further information is available from the rector on 01822 840229 or church warden George Nash on 01822 840558.
