FIRE safety advice and the possibility of a free home safety visit are on offer in July when an advice road show goes on a tour of West Devon communities. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service will be joining some of the regular West Devon Connect events next month (July) to raise awareness about an increase in fire deaths in the South West, particularly among the elderly. An officer from the fire service will be on hand to talk to residents about protecting their homes from fire. Some people may be eligible for free home safety visits and the fire service is keen to speak to local elderly or disabled people and their families about the support on offer. West Devon Connect is an outreach service run by West Devon Borough Council providing information and advice about council, public and support services. Free dog micro-chipping by Dogs Trust is also on offer in July at Bratton Clovelly and Chagford which could save pet owners around £20. Learn Devon (the new name for Adult & Community Learning), Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), Devon Wheels 2 Work and Young Devon are among some of the other organisations joining the roadshow in July. The drop-in sessions are free, friendly and open to all. The West Devon Connect dates for July are: July 1 — Hatherleigh Market – 9.30am to noon — with the fire service, Learn Devon and CAB; July 1 — Spreyton Village Hall — 2pm to 3.30pm — with the fire service and CAB; July 2 — The School Room, Bratton Clovelly — 2pm to 4pm — with free microchipping by Dogs Trust, Okehampton Community Transport, Action on Hearing Loss, Oakhouse Foods, Call24, Wessex Resolutions, Encompass and the local PCSO; July 4 — The Burrow Cafe, Exbourne — 10am to noon — with the fire service; July 11 — Chagford Library — 10.30am to 12.30pm — with Dogs Trust offering free microchipping; July 12 — Charter Hall and Red Lion Yard, Okehampton Community Morning — 10am to 1pm — with advisors from more than 20 organisations; July 15 – Hatherleigh Market — 9.30am to noon — with Devon Wheels to Work, Young Devon and CAB.
