Western Counties West
Okehampton 13
Hayle 3
WHEN teams can win while not playing well then matters cannot be all that bad. A strong scrum performance coupled with an improved defensive effort allowed the young Okes outfit to gain their first home league win of the season.
Middleton, in for training injury victim Penna, and the returning Reddaway, added a needed physical presence. Hayle, stones heavier and inches taller, had no answer in the scrum. Okes also competed well at the lineout though there is room for improvement
Two good penalty kicks by Searle were all Okes had to show in the first 40 minutes. Then in injury time after Vick had mistaken the dead ball line, a huge scrum effort allowed the combative Cook to dive in. Searle added the extras.
The second period saw only a Lello penalty for Hayle. Okes, try as they could, were not able to score again. With Curtis marauding at open side, Searle and Reddaway clearing up all the loose ball, Okes closed the game down.
This win will give confidence to all. The players, despite the performance, were rewarded for their hard work at training. A visit to Wessex in the NPI cup this Saturday allows a break from league action.
