TAVISTOCK support group for the hard of hearing, Hear Me Now, will be working with the Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID) and the town's chamber of commerce to ensure loop systems in shops are working effectively.

The RNID has chosen Tavistock as one of seven towns in the country to be part of its campaign to make sure retail and other public places have adequate facilities in place so that deaf and hard of hearing people are treated fairly.

The campaign, which starts on March 8, will see volunteers testing how they are treated in local places and whether loop systems are installed and working. The results of the campaign will be collated and eventually made public.

Hear Me Now is offering help and advice to chamber of commerce members and small shopkeepers before the campaign, as to how they can improve their services for the hard of hearing and become more deaf-aware.

Any shopkeeper or potential member can contact Hear Me Now support group chairperson Mrs June Wildman at Tavistock Area Services on 01822 616958, or Alistair Kinsey from The Hearing Company, North Street, Tavistock.

l Hear Me Now meets on the fourth Thursday of every month from 10am to noon at the Anchorage Centre, Tavistock, not, as stated in a report last week, on the last Thursday of the month. Apologies for the mistake.
