THIS year's Walkhampton Cottage Garden Society Show produced the highest number of entries for five years — despite the appalling weather.

The entries in the flower and vegetable classes were only slightly lower than in 2007, but the judges said that the quality of the vegetable exhibits was higher.

One of the benefits of the poor weather was the increase in entries in cookery, handicraft and children's classes.

Malcolm McMahon was the main winner in the vegetable section, though George Eggins and Rachel Waldron were close behind. In the flower section, Sheila Glanville was the overall winner. Angela Dawe dominated the cookery classes, though a new entrant, Heather Stribley, took the cup for the best exhibit in those classes with her Victoria sandwich.

For the first time for many years the Buck Taylor cup for the best pasty has left the village. The winner this year was John Cartwright from Horrabridge, surely only a temporary situation! The cups in the home brewing classes were shared by Graham Mcpherson taking the wine cup and Michael D'Oyly the beer cup. This year there was a new trophy, the Huckworthy Bowl, for the best entry in the adult photographic class and the first winner was June Smalley with her stunning picture of a nuthatch leaving its nest.

More than 200 people visited the show, with the refreshment tent being very busy all afternoon. Supporting activities at the show were a magnificent display of MG sports cars, a stall for the Children's Hospice, a plant sales stall and face painting.

One of the encouraging features of this year's show was the number of new entrants. The committee were delighted with this, as it helps keep the show going forward.

They would also like to thank everyone who helped to get the show prepared and also the exhibitors and judges.
