MORE than 230 primary school children from eight primary schools around West Devon last week took part in the annual North Wyke Science Fair.

The fair aims to let children learn about science in a fun way, to meet real scientists and to give them a more positive view of science.

The Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research (IGER) ran five different hands-on workshops for the children.

They included:

l What is in your water? — Chemical analysis of different waters

l Rocks can bend — looking at how fossils are made

l Bugs can be engineers too — looking at soil structure and underground animals

l Rocket workshop — making and firing rockets with Hands on Science

l Sounds like fun —theory of sound and making musical instruments with Physics students from the University of Exeter and members of the Institute of Physics.

Children, teachers and scientists thoroughly enjoyed themselves throughout the sessions!
