DRIVERS who regularly use the road from Tavistock to Lifton are being urged to have their say on Devon County Council's proposal to stop salting the road.

As part of the county council's consultation exercise 'Tough Choices' looking at ways it can make cuts to achieve its savings targets, the main route from Tavistock to Lifton will no longer be on the county council's salting list.

The road had only started being salted around three years ago, before which there were numerous accidents along the road when it was icy.

Milton Abbot Grouped Parish councillors are asking residents to have their say on the cuts proposed by filling out a county council feedback form on issues such as road maintenance and road salting by visiting https://new.devon.gov.uk/highwaysbudget/feedback-form-highway">https://new.devon.gov.uk/highwaysbudget/feedback-form-highway

The consultation closes on January 30, but the last day for any representations about the effect on highways and in particular salting the roads and greatly reducing hedge-cutting on roadside verges is tomorrow (Friday).

Howard Asbridge, parish clerk and parish councillor of Milton Abbot Grouped Parish Council, said: 'Although it appreciates the difficult choices facing Devon Highways, the parish council considers that the proposal to end the salting of the road from Tavistock to Lifton should not be implemented.

'Often used by commuters as well as local people, school buses and emergency service vehicles, this road has steep hills and sharp bends. Before salting began a few years ago, there were frequent accidents in icy conditions.

'This is one "saving" that could have a direct effect on road safety and the ability of local people to get to work or school, keep doctors and hospital appointments etc. If at all possible, this service should be maintained.'
