THIS week is volunteer week — and Tavistock and District Volunteer Bureau is on the look-out for for people to join them.
There are many opportunities to help others in a wide variety of ways which make an important contribution to the community and improve the quality of life for others.
Jan Simpson, of Tavistock Volunteer Bureau, said: 'At this time of year there's always a need for volunteers to help tidy up the gardens of the elderly or infirm.
'Specialist knowledge isn't necessary, although it does help if you can distinguish the flowers from the weeds!'
She said drivers are often needed — and there are even opportunities to drive larger vehicles. Expenses are paid and training is provided where necessary.
Some groups need volunteers who can visit people in their own homes, either to provide company or perhaps help with shopping.
'Other groups need helpers at their meetings or someone to act as receptionist at the door. Sometimes help is needed to enable people to go to the theatre or the zoo, or just to get about town,' said Jan.
There are opportunities for environmentalists, computer experts, teachers and tea-makers.
Anyone who would like to offer a few hours a week should contact the bureau in King Street between 10am and 2pm, Tuesday to Friday, on 01822 618224.
