I FIRMLY believe that Devon County Council has lost the plot! I refer to their proposal (Times, December 11) that we should all fund our own winter road grit. This is wrong on so many levels! I could just about accept that it was too expensive to continue gritting all Devon's side roads, but, as long as we all had access to local grit boxes, we could get by. (Though actually, this 'they supply it and we'll spread it' method fails where residents are not fit enough to wield a shovel). But, really, it is too much to expect us to buy our own grit! It will, and should always be, the council's responsibility to ensure their residents' safety on the roads — all roads! Any other suggestion would be unacceptable to council tax paying residents. Come on DCC have a heart — and a bit of common sense! V L Aston St David's Tavistock
