HATHERLEIGH'S Christmas lights were switched on by Matt Woodley from BBC Radio Devon on Monday night.
Although the weather was not good, a large number of people turned out to see the lights and Matt and join in the festivities.
The town's businesses stayed open until 8pm for late night shopping.
There was a Santa's grotto for children and the young at heart, and a craft fair raised money for the British Heart Foundation.
Refreshments were provided at the tea rooms and seasonal mulled wine at the pottery.
There were also various charity fundraising events.
The Hatherleigh Silver Band provided some festive music.
Town crier Roz Chard, who was wearing her new town crier's costume for the first time, announced the event.
