THE Access Group has examined the proposals for the new visitor centre and alteration at Market Road. In brief its observations are: 1. Ramped area needs to be wide enough for two wheelchairs/buggies to pass freely. 2. Lack of privacy screen in front of toilet doors. 3. We object to reduced number of toilet facilities when visitor numbers are expected to increase. This will produce queueing, therefore need for better weather protection. This is not forward thinking ? surely it would be more cost effective to restore the existing facility. 4. All external walkways need to have a proper non-slip surface, including the proposed oak deck viewing platforms, which will become slippery and ?green? due to the close proximity of the proposed trees. 5. We object most strongly to the loss of car parking spaces both in the Guildhall car park and Market Road. Only one disabled parking space is allocated ? at least three are required. In conclusion, it is interesting that Francis, 7th Duke of Bedford, the person responsible for the historic centre of Tavistock, has been obliterated in all the architectural drawings. His statue, placed at his request looking down Plymouth Road, is not shown at all. Has he been ?beamed up? like Scottie? Plans can be viewed at WDBC offices, Kilworthy Park. Mrs Angela Bradford Secretary, Tavistock Access Group (access and mobility for Tavistock and district) 17 Chaucer Road Down Park Tavistock YOUR lead article on September 14 by Jane Honey is most welcome publicity for Tavistock and West Devon residents concerning the proposed Orientation Centre in Guildhall Square. In his comments why did Mr Selman fail to mention the following? (a) Re-alignment of Market Road will lose 16-17 town centre parking spaces (Application data) (b) The number of toilets will be half the number at present available (plans) (c) Road and crossing alterations will cost an estimated £182,000 (Mr Selman?s figure) (d) Piling required ?will clearly adversely affact any archaeological remains (consultant?s report). An ?iconic new building?? Words fail me. Alex Mettler Landfall Courtenay Road Tavistock
