Francis Clark D division (West)

Whitchurch 2nd XI v Dartington 2nd XI

A FLAT, hard batting pitch ensured this first second XI match for three weeks was filled with runs, but hard work for the bowlers.

Whitchurch lost the toss and were invited to bat by the team propping up the division. It looked a good decision as Whitchurch slumped to 7-2 thanks to accurate bowling from Kidney. Clapham and Daymond steadied the ship, gradually increasing the run rate.

With the opening bowlers soon off, Clapham began to despatch the ball to all parts of the ground. He added 79 with colt Daymond (14) and then 169 in 21 overs with Manfield (62no).

Clapham passed his century and continued relentlessly until he was caught for 168, including 24 fours and 3 sixes. Whitchurch declared on 274-5.

Whitchurch?s bowlers did not find thing easy either. Dartington?s batting was much better than their lowly league position would suggest. Though never threatening to win the game, they scored freely as Whitchurch chased valuable wickets in their quest for promotion.

Topham (81) and Nand Lal (56) were the major contributors in a total of 230-6. Two wickets to Alford and two for Tamblin, both in the first over.

Match drawn, Whitchurch 14 points, Dartington 9. This week, Ivybridge away.
