A KELLY College student had her sporting achievements recognised at a recent awards ceremony held at Lord's Cricket Ground.
Hannah Russell, a lower sixth form student, won the award for Excellence in Disabled Sport at this year's Aviva/Telegraph School Sport Matters Awards.
The School Matters campaign, begun by the Daily Telegraph with Aviva as a sponsorship partner, celebrates outstanding achievements in school sport and physical education.
The campaign has been paying tribute to outstanding pupils, trainers and coaches for the last eight years. However, this year's event generated exceptional interest due to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Presenting the awards and supporting their younger counterparts at the award ceremony were several famous faces from the world of sport, including current and former Olympic gold medallists Jessica Ennis and Sally Gunnell.
The award for Excellence in Disabled Sport was presented by Paralympic cycling quadruple gold medal winner Sarah Storey and her husband Barney, recognising Hannah's huge achievements at last summers Paralympic Games.
During the games, Hannah represented Great Britain and won a silver medal in the 400 metre freestyle and two bronze medals in 100 metres butterfly and 100 metres backstroke.
Since joining Kelly College, Hannah has become a full and active member of both the Kelly and Devon community and recently visited Tor Bridge School in Plymouth to present awards to inspirational students.
The ceremony, named the Pride of Tor Bridge Awards, was a chance to recognise some of the amazing things children do, such as act as carers for their parents or siblings or overcome hardship or disabilities to excel in a given category.
Julie Scotting, headmistress at Tor Bridge, said the school asked Hannah to present the awards because she was an individual who had truly overcome her disabilities to achieve remarkable feats.
The awards were said to have been such a success that plans to make it a yearly event are already in action.
