ELEVEN members of Tavy Division Girlguiding travelled to the Isle of Man this summer for a residential activity week. The activities were more challenging for some than others — some had to face their fears and were encouraged and supported by other members of the group to achieve the tasks. Leaders Di Dingle and Janet Piper watched from the cliff edge as members jumped from the rocks into the sea for what was deemed the most challenging activity —coasteering — each jump getting higher. Team encouragement and communication skills created an atmosphere of trust and all took the final 30ft jump from a cliff overhang. One member, Lydia, abseiled the 120ft cliff face down to the sea shore with an expression of fear as she stepped back and had to put her trust in the equipment and the instructors. On the walk back to the minibus she was overheard to say 'it was easier going down than walking back up'. Other activities included crate stacking, sailing, kayaking and gorge walking as well as shooting, archery and team challenges. Unit leader Janet Piper said: 'The girls developed many employability skills while having fun. They were tolerant of each other in very basic, shared accommodation, worked in a team to solve problems, identified each other's strengths and their changing roles within the team for differing challenges, placed trust in each other and developed their communication skills. It was a pleasure to be with them.'
