A GRINDING mill has been built in a Zambian village, thanks to the congregation of St Andrew?s Church in Whitchurch who raised the £2,000 needed. The project by Operation Sunshine has now been completed for the people of Kachale village, avoiding them having to walk up to 12 miles to get their maize ground. The church raised the money in a short period after hearing about the plight of the local people by the charity?s south west organiser Felicity Derry-Thomas. Secretary of Operation Sunshine South West Maureen Bridge said the grinding mill would provide the local people with a livelihood and others could use it from the nearby villages. ?The money needed was very little in today?s terms and it will make such a difference to the village people. It was wonderful that we, as a church, could make this happen and the money was raised in two or three months,? she said. A further donation of £1,000 was received from Tavistock resident Val Brake, who used to live in Zambia, in memory of her husband Peter.
