Green Party members will be encouraging the public to boycott US oil multinationals with a campaign to be held in Tavistock and Okehampton.

They will be running street stalls aiming to persuade the public to avoid Exxon,(Esso), Texaco and Chevron, all of which allegedly played a role in persuading US President George Bush to withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol on climate change.

The campaign takes place in Tavistock on Friday July 20, and in Okehampton on Saturday July 28 and aims to highlight the immediate action necessary to tackle climate change.

West Devon Green Party spokesman Martin Quinn, of Tavistock, said: 'The International Climate Talks in Bonn, which started on July 16, will be crucial in the defence of our climate.

'We will also be asking members of the public to send a letter to Tony Blair demanding that he ensures the British delegation defends the original Kyoto Protocol, and resists any attempt to dilute it further.

'At least a 60 per cent reduction of greenhouse gasses — from 1990 levels — would be needed to stop climate change.

'By comparison, the Kyoto compromise is the very minimum which Britain should commit itself to, independently of what other nations are prepared to do.

'Labour must stick to its original pledge of a 20 per cent reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 2010.'
