TRAIN enthusiasts can indulge in carriage rides behind vintage diesel locomotives at a special heritage event at Bere Ferrers this weekend.

The railway heritage weekend at the Tamar Belle, beside the village station, will take place on Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon until 5.30pm.

As well as rides there will be shunting demonstrations, miniature steam rides — Saturday only — the chance to have a go at Cranky the Crane, and an 'O' gauge vintage tin plate layout in the booking hall.

Teas and refreshments will be served in the restaurant carriage.

There will also be an opportunity to view the visitor centre under construction.

A further rail experience available on Sunday will be a journey on the Tamar Valley line with anecdotes of life on the railways in years gone by, by Bere Alston resident John Snell.

The train will leave Plymouth station at 1.20pm, but can be joined at any point along the line and teas will be available afterwards at Bere Ferrers.
