Carlsberg South Western League Tavistock 2 Wadebridge 1 THE Langsford Park pitch looked in good condition in the morning but a heavy downpour for over an hour around midday could have so easily had the game called off — credit must go to referee Russell Hale as he deemed the surface fit for play. It turned out to be an entertaining game with the Lambs coming out on top. Goalkeeper Andy Meeds called in sick prior to the match and was replaced by East Cornwall keeper Richard Rowe, whose game against St Columb Major was called off. He was in action in the first minute, palming around a Mike Retter effort around a post, and from the subsequent corner he did really well, falling backwards to tip a Chris Woolstencroft header over the bar. Retter went close again before the Lambs took the lead on 15 minutes. James Cole's corner was not cleared for Steve Daly to head goalwards, but it was cleared off the line only to fall at the feet of Glynn Hobbs to dig it out from under his feet and fire home. Shane Krac went close from a Rowe throw out and his free kick on 35 minutes caused confusion in the Bridgers defence — the ball was not cleared and Hobbs gathered to work himself into a scoring chance to fire home his second. The visitors went close again on a couple of occasions before James Steer saw his effort deflected for a corner then had an appeal for a penalty turned down as he appeared to go tumbling in the area. Wadebridge then went up the other end to give themselves a lifeline on 65 minutes as Woolstencroft swept the ball in after the quick break. But from then on it was all Lambs — they pinned back the visitors but could not get the comfort of a further goal, despite Hobbs putting the ball in the net from a Krac cross on 70 minutes. Sean Cann saw his header come back off the cross bar from a Cole corner and Cole was unfortunate as his header also came back off the bar in the closing stages. A good battling performance from the Lambs that sees them get closer to a mid-table position as they push for a top eight finish to the end of the season. l This Saturday sees a crucial fixture when they take on Torpoint at the Mill with a 2.30pm kick-off. The East Cornwall side are also away when they travel to Nanpean in the League Cup with a 2.30pm kick-off.
