FIRST-time house buyer Matthew Ellis got a big surprise when he was drawn as the winner of £1,000 worth of furniture from Fairway Furniture.

The Tavistock retailer, which has recently had a major external refurbishment and new customer entrance, was celebrating its 153rd birthday in July with the free draw held across its stores.

Matthew, who had only completed the purchase of his first house the day before being told he had won, was thrilled to win such a timely prize.

He said: 'It's always nice to win something but coming now, as I look to furnish my first house, there really couldn't be a better time to win.'

Tavistock store manager Mike James, who presented Matthew with his prize, said: 'We're thrilled for Matthew, and hope that the furniture and carpets he chooses will serve him well for many years to come.'
