THE second round of the ASWMC autotest championship took place in Tavistock?s Bedford car park. The event attracted a large entry of 19 competitors, running in three classes ? a production car class for 14 year olds in standard cars, a clubsport class for Plymouth Motor Club entrants and the ASWMC class for highly modified cars. Tavistock was well represented by several competitors, including Peter Kelsey, Mike Vosper, Rachel Grimshaw and Tony Carver, the local Plymouth Motor Club current double champion. Pete started well, taking two fastest times, but suffered mechanical problems in his Mini special. He resorted to using his road going Subaru, but retiring from the event. Mike, a local farrier, drove well, taking a fastest time, finishing second in class. Rachel, 14, the only lady, and on her first event, excelled, finishing with a quick time. Tony in his Tavistock Tyre and Exhaust Services supported Mini special, took the fastest time of the day, now leading the Plymouth championship, despite the car breaking down on the second test. Ernie Burles, the current ASWMC leader, took the fastest time on 26 out of 32 tests attempted by all, winning the event overall. Plymouth Motor Club would like to thank Cathy Auberton of West Devon Borough Council for allowing them to host the event in Tavistock for this the first time.
