THE re-opening of Tavistock Livestock Market is 'within sight' say operators Ward and Chowen, who hope February will see the long-awaited resumption of livestock sales.

After lengthy consultations with DEFRA veterinary officials during the past few months, a meeting will be held this week to decide if Tavistock Livestock Centre can re-open in mid-February.

Market manager Chris Clapham said: 'The market has undergone a series of improvements during the past four months. Further works are being undertaken, and once finished, Tavistock will have one of the best sites for livestock sales in the area.

'We are hopeful for a positive decision either this week or early next week confirming that our operating procedure is acceptable in terms of bio-security and management controls.'

Mr Clapham said the centre aimed to hold a February Fair store cattle sale on Wednesday, February 20, with an anticipated entry of around 200 head of cattle. 'We have no doubt it will be a great day for the local farming community,' he added.

Regular collection of over-thirty month cattle will continue at the site along with prime and cull sheep.

The livestock centre will also be reopening its monthly plant and poultry markets on the second Saturday of every month beginning in March. March Fair is due to be held on Wednesday, March 13, with between 400 and 500 head of store cattle anticipated.
