ONE of the remaining familiar sounds of our modern Sunday is that of church bells.

It was so good to hear the early morning bells from the church of St Eustachius in Tavistock on July 26, on BBC Radio 4, repeated late on the Sunday evening.

The bells at our parish church ring for about 40 minutes each Sunday in Tavistock, and there are always six, eight or ten ringers, known as campanologists.

The bells can also be hears on other occasions such as weddings, anniversaries and feast days!

Grateful thanks to all dedicated bell-ringers in Tavistock, Lydford, and all over our country — a familiar sound of great meaning to many of us on the first day of each week.

It is possible to be ‘saved by the bell’ in two very different ways.
