PROJECTS which bring benefits to the Tamar Valley are eligible for grants under the new Sustainable Development Fund. It was announced last month that the valley was one of 12 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Westcountry to receive up to £100,000 from the Government. The fund has been designed to encourage individuals, community groups and businesses to co-operate together to develop practical and sustainable solutions to the management of their activities and to instigate new projects. Speaking to the Times last month, AONB manager Tim Selman said the 80 square mile Tamar Valley had to have an economic value if it was to survive in the future. ?This money is money to take risks with ? to try new projects,? he said. Once a large production area for fruits, vegetables and flowers, Mr Selman is keen on reintroducing some of the old crops back on the market and developing new ones like vines. The projects have to follow the principles of sustainable development, involve, bring benefits and have the support of local communities. Grants can be up to 75% for voluntary and community projects and 50% for private sector bids. All applications need to be submitted by October 10. Easy to complete application forms can be obtained by contacting The Tamar Valley AONB Service on 01579 351348. It is hoped that a similar amount of cash will be available in subsequent years.
