OKEHAMPTON Simmons Bowling Club saw P Wellman play his grandson G Ayley in the final for the Hutchings Handicap Cup. Age and experience eventually came out on top of a hard fought game.

It is believed this is the first time a grandfather has met his grandson in a final at Okehampton.

The final of the Tilley two wood threw up another interesting match when Iris Gill met Richard Curtis, in a close fought game. Iris eventually came out on top 13 to 12.

Other results in the 2004 championships saw M Kirkland win the over 60s cup, R King the non-winners cup, J Tucker and J Rose the Edgecumbe men?s pairs, with J Rose going on to win the Newcombe cup and L Phare winning the Sydney Simmons Club championship.

In the Ladies? championships Gill won the Jack Vanstone championship, E Letchford the handicap, P Jones the ladies? two wood and P Fisher the ladies? non-winners cup. In the ladies? pairs P Jones and J Hutchings beat A Hardwick and B Letchford.

In the Edith Furze mixed pairs Mrs J Hutchings and G Fisher came out on top, while Mrs B Letchford, P Hollis and L Rose won the Len Jordon mixed triples.

With the results of the 71 Shield trophy now in, this shows yet another good results for Okehampton, with the A team winning the shield by 9 clear points and although the B team, in their first year in this league, ended up next to the bottom of the table they won as many games as the two teams above them, but inexperience saw them give away too many shots.
