A DECENT sum of money was made by the volunteers of Tavistock Rotary Club recently, who manned the bookstall and 'guess the weight of the geese' competition at the town's Goose Fair.
The club raised just over £700 from the two events with around 500 guesses registered for the goose competition, made possible by local farmer Richard Mathews who loaned two geese for customers to estimate their weight.
The winner of the competition, who opted for the cash alternative to the oven-ready goose for Christmas, was Tavistock resident Lawrence Bodley. His guess came closest to the combined weight of the two geese at 22lb and 8oz.
Rotary president Clive Fairchild said: 'The money raised will enable us to continue helping local causes and I'm proud of our team of Rotarians for the way that they worked together to make this fundraising event such a success.'
Mr Fairchild added that the club was also grateful to everyone who supported the stall and to Richard Mathews for the loan of his geese.
