TAVISTOCK Livestock Centre report another exceptional market with flying prices and a full ring of buyers for the entry of 305 cattle at the Goose Fair cattle sale.

Breeding cattle sold to £925 for a 10yo South Devon cow from SG Palmer and Sons, Horndon. In the bull section prices topped at £1150 for a 3yo Charolais from C A Uglow, Tavistock.

In the store cattle section, prices topped at £1,348 for a 22mo Charolais x steer from B J and L Landick, Sampford Spiney. Eight steers averaged £1,226 per head. Heifers topped at £1,040 for three 20/23mo Charolais x from the same vendor, selling eight heifers, averaging £939 each.

Other notable prices included £1,095 for three 25/27mo South Devon x steers from I G Mortimore and Son, Chagford; £1,052 for a 20mo Charolais x from Abel Bros, Peter Tavy; £1,040 for four 23/24mo Limousin x steers from C H Perkins and Partners, Lewdown; £1,018 for two 23mo Hereford x steers from J E Spry and Sons, Buckland Monachorum; £1,000 for a 14mo Limousin x steer from R M Horwell, Callington; £995 for three 16/18mo Charolais x steers from R E Doidge and Son, Callington and £938 for a 17mo South Devon x heifer from J Eggins, Roborough;

Ward and Chowen, auctioneers at Tavistock Livestock Centre, report an entry of 1,452 sheep at their Goose Fair sheep sale. It started with breeding and grazing ewes which topped at £116 for a pen of 10 2T Cheviot ewes for W J and D M Jordan, Chagford. Other notable prices included £102 for a pen of 12 4T Suffolk Ewes from S G Palmer and Son, Horndon, and £100 for a pen of nine 2T Mule ewes from Roskilly Farms, Tavistock.

An excellent entry of store lambs met a strong trade with prices reaching £76.50 for a pen of six Suffolk x ewe lambs from Roskilly Farms, Tavistock. Other lambs sold to £70 for a pen of 14 Scotch Mule Ewe lambs from W J Harding, Throwleigh; £67 for a pen of 13 Lleyn mule ewe lambs from A J Eggins, Roborough.

An entry of 219 breeding rams met a strong trade with prices topping at £460 for a 2T Texel from P and W Coaker, Widecombe. Messrs Coaker sold eight rams, averaging £268.75 per head.

Other breeding ram prices included £360 for 2T Bluefaced Leicester for H Havill, Trusham selling three rams in total averaging £356.66; £340 for a 2T Cheviot from WJ and D Jordan, Chagford; £330 for 2T Beulah from N Greep, Cornwood.
