Despite the weather Okehampton Golf Club has been a busy place this last week. On Sunday the ladies held their annual meeting.
Although the course was open, with nine hole winter greens, the ladies decided not to play golf in the strong winds and rain. However, the meeting was well attended for the ladies to hear about some of the changes being made by English Women's Golf Association, who have now taken over the running of ladies' golf, from the Ladies' Golf Union.
Outgoing captain Cherry James handed over the badge of office to Lynn Hazelton. The ladies have done well this year as, with only about 30 regular playing members, they only just missed the finals of the Devon League, made the quarter finals of the Sheelah Creasy and made the finals day of the President's Trophy — winning in the morning, only just losing to Ilfracombe. Many of the ladies have won throughout the county in various competitions so it was felt that 2008 has been a very successful year for Okehampton. 2009 promises to be extra busy as it is Oke's turn to run the Devon League this year.
Wednesday saw the ladies playing a drawn betterball for the Jarman Cup; winning with an impressive 39 points were Penny Deakin and Pat Kirby. The next three teams all had 33pts but in second place on countback of the back six were Cherry James and Doris Jewell, third were Kay King and Val Steer. On Saturday the competition was a threeball, two to count, Stableford. Winning division one with a tremendous 86 pts were Graham and Matt Milford with John Birch, second with 81 pts were Phil Atherton, Jonny Rattenbury and Del Nash, and third were Bob Davies, Nick Heath and Kevin Rice with 79pts. Division two was won by Paul Ayris, Kerry Skinner and Ricky Lee. second were Rob Camies, Barry Down and Nick Agnew. third were Phil Hobbs, Andy and Lawrence Parry with 76 pts.
