TAVISTOCK Squash second team came up against David May's team for the return match of the Plymouth Company League division two. David May were missing two key players and were only three points ahead in the league,  while Tavistock have gained a new number one player and are becoming a team to be reckoned with. First up, playing in number five position was Malcolm Holton, against Jack Philpotts. Malcolm got down to business with a range of tight reverse angled shots and dominated the T, winning the first game 9-3. He stormed into the next game, giving Jack no opportunity to get into it, and winning it 9- 3. Malcolm was not to be denied in the third game, winning 9-1. It was first game to Tavistock. Next up for Tavistock, in number four position, was Andy Howell. He came up against a wily opponent, Alan Foy who lacked fitness, but had the knack of retrieving everything. Andy won the first game 9-6, but eased back, which allowed Alan to capitalise on loose shots and win the second 9-7. Andy came back strongly to win the third game 9-4, and the fourth 9-5. Now it was second game to Tavistock. Terry Beckett came up against Ben Philpott who is an up and coming young player. Terry got stuck into the game quickly and with excellent tight shots to the wall, won the first game 9-3. Ben seemed to give up in the second game and Terry was leading 8-3, but with excellent, long rallies, Ben worked hard to pull back to 8 all. Terry chose set 2 and hung on to win the second game 10-8. In the third game, Terry kept driving and lobbing the ball deep into Ben's backhand. It was a see-saw tussle and again Terry got to 8-5, before Ben pulled back to 8 all. Terry chose set 2 and despite the marker calling one of his shots out of court at a crucial point 9 all, hung on to win 10-9 in a closely fought match. Third game to Tavistock. In second position, Dave Ruffell came up against Martin Newberry, an experienced and accomplished player. Martin stormed into the lead, winning the first game 9-4 and the second 9-3. But Dave began to get his game together with tight drop shots and took the third game  9-3. Martin went all out in the fourth game and Dave went down fighting 9-3. Bob Giddings, a class player, came up against an on-form Guy Philpotts. Bob lost the first game 2-9 and the second 4-9. But he began to play some excellent shots and prolonged the rallies, giving Guy problems. Bob was leading in the third game 8-7, but allowed Guy to catch up and overtake him, to win 10-9, after a fine display of squash played to a high standard.  Tavistock won the match three games to two, a worthy result and a good beginning to the second half of the season.  Anybody wanting to play squash should come along to the Wednesday club nights and join in with players of all different standards.
