AFTER winning Division 3 of the Plymouth and District Badminton League last season by a comfortable margin BAT?s Badminton Club ?A? team began their life in Division 2 recently with a match against YMCA Kitto.
In the men?s doubles rubbers brothers Julian and James Cooper started off in the right direction with a 15-6, 15-2 win. Julian Cooper and Alan Berry then stuttered slightly by losing the first game of the next rubber 7-15 but then recovered to take the next two rubbers 15-12, 15-10.
The third men?s doubles rubber saw James Cooper and Alan Berry resume where they left off last season with a 15-8, 15-10 victory.
In the ladies? doubles rubbers sisters Frances and Becky Ward started off their season together in Division 2 with a well worked out 15-3, 15-8 win. Frances then partnered Heather Cooper in the second rubber and they played some very long rallies but overcame the Kitto pair comfortably 15-8, 15-7. Becky Ward then partnered Heather Cooper and they took the first game easily 15-7; The Kitto pair then came back and took the second game 15-8 and the rubber was forced into a deciding game. Becky and Heather then turned on the style to take the game and the rubber 15-5.
In the mixed doubles rubbers James Cooper and Frances Ward began with a 15-6, 15-6 victory which was followed up with mother and son partnership Heather and Julian Cooper winning 15-9, 15-4.
With only one rubber left Alan Berry and Becky Ward decided to keep people guessing to the end. The first game was taken by them 15-12 but then after winning the first point of the second game they found themselves 15-13 down. With some careful play they regained the initiative and took the game and the rubber 17-15.
BAT?s ?A? team had begun their time in Division 2 with a crushing 9-0 win over YMCA Kitto.
