PRINCETOWN'S intrepid fundraising policeman is at it again — PC Stewart Pearce, not content with swimming and running for charity, is now aiming to cycle across China for Mencap.

The community policeman has secured a place on a 480-kilometre bike ride from Tiananmen Square in Beijing, which leaves on May 26 next year.

PC Pearce said: 'I've got myself a place and taken up the challenge involving six months training to prepare for the eight-day ride.

'I've also pledged to raise £2,500 for Mencap.'

Around 100 people from all over the country are attempting the ride, which PC Pearce first noticed from an advertisement at Kelly College swimming pool.

'I love this sort of challenge and China is an interesting place. I've been to the Far East but never to China and it will be fun to meet like-minded people,' said PC Pearce.

During the gruelling ride, he will take in sights like the Great Wall of China, the Ming tombs and some stunning mountain scenery.

'It's really a build up to the biggest challenge which will be the year I retire, when I hope to cycle across America — that's a lot of kilometres,' said PC Pearce, who has already run marathons, completed a Land's End to John o' Groats trip and countless charity swims.

He is organising a big Burns' Night party to raise money towards his target, plus other events like a fashion show and concert.

Anybody who would like to sponsor PC Pearce can pick up a sponsor form at Tavistock Police station.

He said he would also be very interested to hear from anyone who can donate items which can be sold or raffled.

'People are being very good — and I've had a lot of support from people up in Princetown,' he said.
