What a start to the week it was for the ladies of Okehampton Golf Club. On Monday the Sheelagh Creasy team went to Thurlestone and, on a lovely day with hardly any wind, played exceptionally well to win their match.
Though Sue Glanville, Pat Kirby and Janet Hatch lost after some tight matches, Maureen Willcocks kept her amazing away form to win 3-2, Doris Jewell had a fighting finish to win 2 up, Gladys Thatcher had a tremendous game to win 5-3 and Lorna McCurrach also played extremely well to win on the 15th.
This win must put the team in with a good chance of making the quarter-finals if they can win their remaining home matches.
On Tuesday the ladies held their invitation which was much enjoyed. With many prizes to be won it was also very competitive.
Amanda Windsor with her guest Jill from Exminster won with 41 points. Second were Mary Keir and Liz Slee from Launceston with 40 points and third were Marcia Jones and her guest Dilys with 39 points. With the best odd holes being won by Penny Deakin and Tavistock guest Jan Hurst 20 points, and best even holes was won by Jane Warren and DoreenWarren from Crediton, also 20 points.
The best front nine with 18 points was Cherry James and Val Symmons from Libbaton and the best back nine with an excellent 23 points was Janet Hatch and guest Sylvia Caunter from Holsworthy.
Nearest the pin on the fourth for silver players was Penny Deakin, nearest on the seventh for bronze was Jan Hurst and nearest on the 12th Jane Warren. The longest drive for Silver was Vice Captain Lynn Hazelton and longest drive for bronze players was Amanda Windsor.
Thursday saw several of the lady veterans go to Stover to play in the championship.
Jane Warren had a wonderful round of golf to gain the runner-up cup with a net 73. Lady captain Cherry James won the first silver prize with a net 76. Kay King was fourth silver net 77 and Doris Jewell was fifth bronze. So Okehampton were well represented!
