IN the first round of the Palariat Memorial Trophy played at Okehampton members from Tavistock Golf Club had an excellent win.
Their winning team of Alan Gawman and Kenny Mckenzie; Colin Nolan and John Hirst; George Gawman and Nick Mier; Graham Ruth and Tom Dodd and Mark Ingram and Mike White beat Royal North Devon 3pts to 2pts. The next round will be on May 31.
The men also won their match against Launceston in the first round of 'The Mail on Sunday' competition. In a tight match it was all to play for but last man out, Mike White, won his game giving Tavistock a 3 to 2 win.
The next round will be against Okehampton at Tavistock.
Richard Wraith, the new club captain, had bright but breezy weather for his Captain's drive In. Always a popular event there was a full field and close scoring.
The winning pair were Colin Nolan and Mike Beveridge with 44 pts followed by Kerry Baker and Sally Hills, Dan Pratley and Ken Cole and Ray Steer and Richard Smith all with 43 pts. The best mixed pair were George and Nicky Gawman with 42 pts.
The first two opens of the year were both well supported. In the ladies four ball team event 128 ladies took part. Overall Winners, first Wendy George, Lyn Jones, Tracy Sutcliffe and Julie Harding with 79 pts; second Julie Barber, Julie Ellis, June Lee and Veronika Haydon-Foster 77pts and in third place, on countback with 76 pts, were Shirley Trevena, Barbara Ham, Margaret Burn and Sybil Cole.
The best home team was Maggie Hillman, Nicky Gawman, Peggy Burge and Marion Stenhouse with 75pts
There was a capacity turnout of 188 players for the Tavistock men veterans' open.
Another first for the event was a hole-in-one for John Hill who received a bottle of whisky and a cash prize. Winners for the visitors were C Coles (Churston ) and C Barnes (Torquay) with 45pts; second, J Lee and R Jefford ( East Devon), third B Luscombe and C Waldren (Stover).
The winning home team were Ken Kendall and Jerry Harden on 44; second, Patrick Stewart and Mike O'Dowd; third David Anthony and Dave Treble.
