ONE the highlights of Tavistock Golf Club's busy season is the Club Captain's Charity Day and, once again, it was extremely well supported and raised more than £7,000.

This year's captain Shaun Kiely's chosen charities were St Luke's Hospice and CHICKS (Country Holidays for Inner City Children) and a very special charity in aid of Archie Barton.  As a baby, four year-old Archie lost the lower part of his legs, his nose and finger tips due to meningitis and monies raised will help towards his aftercare.

The winners of the golf competition were Chris Gawman and Matt Boon with 47 points with Tim Baskersville and Graham Horton in second place with 43 beating Shaun Kiely and Dave Burge over the back nine.  The men's longest drive was by Kenny MacKenzie and for the ladies Bridie Sampson.  Nearest the pin was Mike Wakely for the men and Sam Avens for the ladies.  The club said a thank you to everyone who helped to make it a successful event and those generously donated.  It is hoped more than £8,000 will be raised.

The popular four ball better ball mixed team open event attracted a large field with Tavistock teams topping the scoreboard.   The winners of the Rose Bowls were the team of  Rod and Maggie Hill and Graham and Bev Ruth had 81pts on countback from George and Nicky Gaw-man and Alan Gawman and Lynn Swift. Third with 76 were Sue and Mike Coles, Simon Bridgewater and Bridget Luckham.  Alan and Jean Peace, John Vanstone and Collette Burgess (Bude and North Devon) were the best visitors' team with 76.  Men's longest drive, George Gawman (Tavistock), ladies Jean Pearce (Bude).  Men's nearest the pin Malcolm Neale (Looe), ladies Maggie Hillman (Tavistock).
