LEE Carey won the Okehampton Golf Club 36 hole Championship on Saturday with a total gross score of 144.

The recent dry weather combined with tricky pin positions and a difficult wind provided one of the toughest challenges in recent years.

The morning round saw some unexpected names topping the leaderboard with Keith Harkness?s excellent 70 leading by two shots from Steven Hill?s 72.

Breathing down their necks were two of the favourites, Lee Carey and Gareth Holt a further shot behind.

The afternoon round provided a sterner test for the early leaders who dropped off the pace with rounds of 80 and 78 respectively.

The lower handicap players mastered the afternoon conditions better and an excellent 70 from defending champion Kevin Cornwall made up for a disappointing morning round and was enough to claim second place.

This was never going to be enough to win as Lee Carey scored a solid 71 in the afternoon to claim a clear five shot victory.

The 36 hole handicap competition for the Hutchings Cup was won by James Hall with a combined net of 129, enough to beat Andrew Smallridge and Keith Harkness by one shot.

Jim Butcher won the Leonard Tankard for the best 36 hole score for ages 55 and over with 153. Results:
