WEST Devon schoolchildren have shown their support for a greener borough by helping to recycle 4.9 tonnes of old Yellow Pages directories. Fourteen schools across the borough took part in the Yellow Woods Challenge – the simple, educational and fun environmental campaign run by Yellow Pages, the Woodland Trust and West Devon Borough Council. Pupils asked people to give them their old Yellow Pages directory for recycling when the new one was delivered, while learning about important green issues in the classroom. The schools competed against each other for the chance to win cash prizes from Yellow Pages for recycling the highest number of old directories per pupil. St Peter's Church of England Junior School, Tavistock, scooped the 'Gold Oak' title and will be rewarded with £300 for recycling a fantastic ten old directories per pupil. The 'Silver Birch' award and £200 prize money went to Exbourne Church of England Primary School while Princetown Primary carried off the 'Bronze Beech' certificate and £100 in cash. St Peter's also bagged the bonus prize of £100 for creating the best artwork from the old directories collected in this year's local challenge. The top-performing schools were honoured at a celebratory event held at St Peter's School last Thursday. All participating schools will receive a certificate from campaign mascot, Kirk, in recognition of their recycling efforts. For every pound awarded to schools, Yellow Pages has given a matching pound to the Woodland Trust – the UK's leading woodland conservation charity. 'Seeds to trees' kits have also been awarded to the top three recycling schools and to Lydford Primary School, Gulworthy Primary School and Horrabridge Community Primary School for achieving fourth, fifth and sixth place in the local competition.
