A FORMER Tavistock College pupil has qualified for a £500 Golden Hello as she begins her new career as a movement controller with the Royal Logistics Corps. Samantha (Sammy) Langdon, 16, from Tavistock, has just enlisted into the Army at the Armed Forces Careers Office in Plymouth. She was presented with her Golden Hello certificate on Friday by Sergeant Steph Pender, who works for Army recruiting in the area. The ?Golden Hello? scheme has been designed to encourage those with suitable qualifications obtained from school, college or university to consider a career in the British Army. Sammy is fulfilling her dream of becoming an Army soldier, as she begins her Phase 1 training this week at the Army Training Regiment in Bassingbourn. Sammy couldn?t wait to start her new career: ?No one was surprised that I headed straight to the Army careers office after I finished college. My GCSE results were pretty good, but the challenges and opportunities offered by a job in the Army have always appealed to me,? she said. As a movement controller, Sammy will assist in the planning, preparation, co-ordination and control of military movement in support of operations, training and administrative deployments worldwide. In addition, she will be trained to assist in the preparation and documentation of passengers, vehicles and cargo for movement by air, sea, road or rail transport and supervise the call forward, embarkation and discharge of military personnel, vehicles and equipment at a transport terminal or shipment point. Sergeant Steph Pender of the AFCO in Plymouth said: ?Sammy is exactly the type of high calibre applicant the Army is looking to recruit, at soldier and officer level which is why she qualified for her Golden Hello. ?
