A WEST Devon Air Training Corps cadet was presented with a Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award on a recent visit to St James' Palace in London.
Tom Hoare, 19 from Stoke Climsland, went to the palace to be presented with his gold award by the Duke of Edinburgh.
A former Tavistock College student, Tom was a member of 2312 Tavistock squadron of the ATC for five years. In this time he achieved bronze and silver awards and achieved gold when his group went to the Picos Mountains in Northern Spain.
Tom said: 'It was a great experience achieving gold and was even more rewarding going up to St James' Palace to collect the award from the Duke of Edinburgh himself. Having this award under your belt can help open up so many opportunities in your life.'
Tom is now looking to take up a career in the RAF.
His mother Kathy said: 'Tom is a son to be proud of. He is a true team player and was always mindful to help others achieve and complete tasks within his group.
'In achieving this award he has proved nothing is impossible with determination and a positive mind. With many of these types of awards, they are not just for the glory of self achievement but for enduring, supporting and encouraging others during testing terrain, weather conditions and the unknown that may be thrown in.
'I certainly recommend any youngster to take part.'
