A TAVISTOCK bar has been granted permission for an extension to provide a function room, additional toilets and a pool room.
The extension at Jack Chams at 17 West Street will be at ground floor and first floor level and use part of the existing garden area.
Tavistock Town Council opposed the plan, claiming it did not comply with local plan policies for conservation areas, and three local residents sent letters of objection, mainly concerned about noise.
In a report to West Devon Borough Council's planning committee, officers said the design of the extension, with its pitched roof and natural materials, was considered appropriate for the site within a conservation area. It was also considered that there would not be any significant increase in noise from the premises.
A glazed rear door and panels attached to the pitched roof and side fencing would help to reduce noise, said planning officers and it was felt that the proposed first floor extension would help to screen the existing raised patio garden smoking area and could help reduce noise escaping from this existing facility.
