GIRLS in Tavistock are being urged to arm themselves against cervical cancer by keeping up with vaccinations.

NHS Devon is running clinics in Tavistock to ensure teenage girls receive the full course of the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccinations.

The HPV vaccine is usually given in schools, and consists of three injections that are given over a six-month period. All three doses are needed to be fully protected against cervical cancer.

The clinics are being run for girls aged 12 to 18 who have yet to begin or complete their HPV vaccination course and for whatever reason, failed to get vaccinated at school.

Dr Virginia Pearson, director of public health for NHS Devon, said: 'Cervical cancer is one of the biggest killers of women in their thirties, so I urge all girls to get protected at an early age. Infection with some types of HPV can cause abnormal tissue growth and other changes to cells, which can lead to cervical cancer.'

The clinics are being run at Tavistock Hospital on February 24, May 19 and June 16. All sessions are run from 5pm to 8pm. The clinics are by appointment only.
