A TREMENDOUS charity effort by two Petrockstowe youngsters raised £345 for the Blue Peter Water Works Appeal through a bring and buy sale last month.

Thirteen-year-old Lynn Vallance, a pupil at Okehampton College, organised her first bring and buy sale with the help of friend Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin.

Lynn has in recent years taken part in the Blue Peter bikeathon, raising money for leukaemia and has completed many sponsored swims to raise money for other charities.

When she saw the plight of the people in Tanzania and Uganda, who had to walk miles only to get stale, dirty water, she realised what we take for granted and decided she would like to help the Blue Peter appeal.

She asked Torrington Community School friend Cheryl if she would like to help and the two girls got together on evenings to make their posters.

With the help of their parents and a close friend, Claire, they arranged the date so that it would fall in the Easter holidays.

Vicks of Hatherleigh kindly allowed the fund-raisers to hold their stall in their busy market on Tuesday, April 15. The girls also placed an advert in the Petrockstowe News asking villagers for donations of items, and gave out the arrangements at their local churches which they both attend.

Many people visited the stall from far and wide, including one man from California who was interested in the appeal. Glorious sunshine all morning ensured a hectic time on the stall.

Lynn and Cheryl would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped make the event such a success.
