INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed concert pianist Mark Bebbington will open the new Concert Society season at Kelly College, Tavistock, next Wednesday, September 28. Born in Coventry, Mark studied at the Royal College of Music with Phyllis Sellick and later in Italy with Aldo Ciccolini, who described him as ?stunningly gifted?. Mark has given recitals in Europe, the Far East and North Africa and has been a soloist with the London Philharmonic and Philharmonia orchestras at the Royal Festival Hall and the Barbican. He has performed with many leading conductors. Mark has a very wide-ranging repertoire, which includes contemporary work, and his programme for Wednesday?s recital includes the world premiere of Tom Ingoldsby?s Sonata No 2. The concert opens with Schubert?s B-flat major Sonata, D960, his last completed piano work, lyrical and profoundly meditative. Mark will also play two Nocturnes by Chopin ? Op 9 No 1 and Op 15 No 1 ? and three of his Mazurkas. Stunning compositions by Lizst complete the evening: the Mephisto Polka, his arrangement of the Liebestod from Wagner?s ?Tristan and Isolde? and his Concert Paraphrase on Verdi?s ?Rigoletto?. The concert begins at 7.45pm in the Melvin Hall, Kelly College. Tickets at the door are £8 (£6 concessions), but a money saving subscription ticket for the series of six concerts in the new season is available at £25 (£20 concessions). Under 18 year olds, accompanied by a ticket holder, are admitted free.
