FIVE sacks of litter were collected during a tidy-up of Whitchurch Down organised by the Rotary Club of Tavistock.

The session, on November 15, was one of the club's community projects for the year. Discarded items were mainly food wrappers, drinks cans and bottles, with the largest item being an abandoned tent.

Club community services leader Andy Cox said they had not collected as much rubbish as expected, but many people exercised their dogs on the common and some of the things thrown away would be harmful to animals if accidentally digested.

The club thanked Dils Lord, of West Devon Borough Council, for organising the black sacks and litter-picking tools and the collection of the rubbish at the end.
