PLANNING for this year's Devon Youth Games is well under way in West Devon.

The event, which celebrates youth sport, is due to take place in Barnstaple on Sunday June 27 and will include young people from across the borough.

The hosts, North Devon District Council, will be staging the event at North Devon Leisure Centre, TARKA Tennis Centre, Rock Park and Parks School.

The games are being sponsored by DML, and are being funded by the Active Devon Sports Partnership.

West Devon trials for the nine sports that make up the games will be taking place over the coming months and any children interested in the sports are welcome to come along.

The dates of the trials, times and venues are as follows:

l Athletics - years 4 to 6, girls and boys, trials on May 4 from 6pm to 7pm at Tavistock College.

l Cricket - years 8 and under, for girls, trials on May 3 from 5pm to 6pm at Kelly College, Tavistock.

l Hockey - years 6 to 8, for boys and girls, trials on May 3 from 5pm to 6pm at Kelly College, Tavistock.

l Netball - years 7 to 10, for girls, trials on April 29 from 5pm to 6pm at Kelly College, Tavistock.

l Swim run - years 5 to 10, for boys and girls, trials on May 1 from 5.15pm to 6.30pm at Meadowlands in Tavistock.

l Tag Rugby - years 6 and under, for boys and girls, trials on May 9 from 10.30am to 12 noon at Okehampton Rugby Club.

l Tag Rugby - years 7 to 9, for girls, trials on May 9 from 10.30am to 12 noon at Okehampton Rugby Club

l Tennis - years 5 and under, for boys and girls, trials on April 30 from 6pm to 7pm at Tavistock Tennis Club.

l Tennis - years 6 to 8, for boys and girls, trials on May 7 from 6pm to 7pm at Tavistock Tennis Club.

Trials for the basketball team took place at Okehampton College yesterday (Wednesday).
