ORGANISERS of a Tavistock event which could be the fastest community fundraiser ever held in the UK say they are delighted at the way in which support is beginning to flood in. The Bedford Mile, a huge fun run which is taking place in the town on April 1, aims to raise £100,000 towards a new athletics track to be built at Tavistock College. The event now has a new website on which people can register for the run and pledge their support — and more than £4,000 was pledged in just the first week the site went live. The athletic track scheme is a unique partnership comprising Tavistock College, representing the state education sector, Kelly College, representing private education and community sports group Tavistock Athletic Club. Martin Exley, of Tavistock Athletic Club, said sponsor forms had been distributed to most of the major sports clubs in West Devon, athletics clubs across the south west and many businesses in the area. He said: 'Support for the event has been fantastic. On Sunday, at one of the biggest local races, the Plymouth Hoe 10, all the 600 runners were encouraged to help us in our efforts and the response was very, very positive. 'The athletic club also works closely with all the local primary schools, organising a cross country league — and we know that all the pupils in the area are being encouraged to take part. After all, this is a community facility we're aiming to build for future well-being and fitness, as well as athletic prowess, of everyone in the area — young and old alike! And wouldn't it be great to find and train an Olympic star on a Tavistock track?' Martin said the Bedford Mile promised to be a fantastic community event in which everyone could take part, whether they hopped, skipped, jogged or crawled the route between Bedford Square and Drake Statue, dressed as pantomime horses or kitted out in full deep-sea diving gear! 'Even Calstock Unicycle Club is hoping to unicycle the mile!' he said.
