THIS Sunday will see the second running of the Hatherleigh Road Race. Having just appeared on the event's calendar last year, the cycle race has grown and now has advanced entries totalling more than all entries for last year's race. Entries have rolled in from as far away as Penzance to Bristol

Those who raced last year must have enjoyed the area's fine roads. Last year's winner, Richard Cartland (Cycleweb.co.uk/Synergy), from Birmingham, has entered to defend his win.

But the field looks open as there are other strong riders such as Ben Luckwell (FS Maestro), a previous stage winner of the Tour of Britain Milk Race, and Robert Adams (Bristol South).

Team Alltrax (Plymouth based) and Exeter Wheelers have four-man teams entered, with Team Training FX and Penzance Wheelers comprising three-man squads.

Okehampton Cycle Club, sponsored by Okehampton Cycles, is promoting the road race. Club member Phil Sage will be flying the OKCC colours of red, white and black in the race.

The competition will start in Folly Gate at 10am. The course follows a local circuit that takes in Lamerton, Jacobstowe and Bassett's Cross and their returns to Lamerton (one lap).

Following eight laps the race will conclude in Folly Gate.

Spectators are welcome to view the race, though it is advisable to park away from the course to ensure good road safety.
