VISITORS to South Zeal on June 15 can look around 20 gardens which are opening their gates for charity. Some of the gardens are laid out within South Zeal's historic burgage plots, with others nestling on the edge of Dartmoor, as well as quiet cottage gardens, lawns with mature trees,  two national collections of herbs and a chicken sanctuary. The gardens will be open from 10.30am until 6pm and programmes can be purchased from any of the open gardens or from the Victory Hall in the centre of the village in the morning. There will also be plenty to tempt the taste buds —coffee and cake in the morning, ploughman's lunches and lovely homemade puddings, as well as cream teas in the afternoon in the recreation ground. There will also be a plant sale and a free lunchtime concert from local choir Moor Harmony. This popular event is held every year to raise funds for the Victory Hall in South Zeal and costs £3 per adult for access to all the gardens with children entering for free.
